President of Conmebol affirms that FIFA "has the responsibility" for the 2030 World Cup to be held in South America

The president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), Alejandro Domínguez, assured the EFE Agency in Montevideo on Thursday that the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, and that body “have the responsibility” for the 2030 World Cup to be played in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

“We believe that the centenary is not another World Cup if it is not ‘the FIFA World Cup’ and that there is a great responsibility, which (Gianni) Infantino has, not as president of the institution, but rather that of FIFA as soccer society”, he expressed during a conversation organized by the local newspaper Búsqueda.

Likewise, he affirmed that given the “moment that football is experiencing in South America” in which the main men’s cups are in the hands of Argentina and the U-20 of Uruguay help “in a great way” for the continent to return to “sit on the table” to discuss and share their experience and the reason for their recent victories.

“Everyone understands that this World Cup must be celebrated in a different way and we are aware and we want this World Cup to be reissued and played here, where everything was born, which was in Uruguay and Argentina,” he asserted.

Domínguez insisted that regardless of the changes of government in the different countries that aspire to the organization of the highest event in world football “everyone always assumes the same responsibility.”

For his part, the Uruguayan National Secretary for Sport, Sebastián Bauzá, expressed during his participation in the conversation that the organization of the World Cup is a “country project” that has been planned since 2010.

“100 years have passed, we have to come here to celebrate, but this World Cup, hopefully, will also help us plan the next 100 years,” he said.

Meanwhile, the president of the Uruguayan Football Association, Ignacio Alonso, assured that football “today is united around this idea” and added that it is an institutional work that “transcends the administrations” and that from the organization Uruguayans take it as one of their main objectives.

“Under different modalities, at each moment, the idea was developed. Then, more organized in recent years, we were able to establish this rapprochement between Governments and Federations that had the fundamental impulse of Conmebol, the fundamental support, ”he asserted.

The meeting served as an opportunity to present the renovations that will be made to the mythical Centennial Stadium, the place where the first World Cup in history was played in 1930.

In this sense, Bauzá explained that among the main renovations that are intended to be carried out, the reduction of the surface of the playing field stands out in order to expand the stands to a capacity of 72,000 spectators, as well as the conservation of the architectural line that “must be preserved very jealously.”

Among other renovations will be the installation of roofing in all sectors of the stadium except in the area where the famous Torre de los Homenajes stands.
