The president of China, Xi Jinpingon Wednesday called for negotiations between Moscow and kyiv during a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodimir Zelensky, and warned that “in a nuclear war there is no winner,” Chinese state media reported, in a move expected after Beijing said it wanted to act as a peace broker.

The government of Xi will send a “special representative” to Ukraine for talks about a possible “political agreement,” the government said in a statement broadcast on state television.

China it has tried to present itself as neutral in the war and has refused to criticize Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Before the start of the conflict in February 2020, Xi and the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, issued a joint statement in which they affirmed that their governments maintained an “unlimited friendship”.

Xi’s government launched a peace proposal in February, calling for a ceasefire as well as peace talks.

“Negotiation is the only viable way out,” state television said in its information about the conversation between Xi and Zelensky.

“In a nuclear war there is no winner,” the report added. “All parties involved must remain calm and restrained when dealing with the nuclear issue and really look to the future and destiny of themselves and humanity as a whole and work together to manage the crisis.”

Russia welcomes Chinese readiness

Russia welcomed on Wednesday the readiness of China to participate in the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine after the first telephone conversation between the leaders of China, Xi Jingingand from Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky.

“We welcome the willingness of the Chinese side to make efforts to advance the negotiation process,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zajárova said in a statement.

According to Zajárova, Russia sees many “coincidences” between the Russian approach and the Chinese peace proposal, published on February 24, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the Russian military intervention in Ukraine.
