Prince Harry reveals that his brother Prince William was not allowed to marry in the uniform he would have liked. Queen Elizabeth II vetoed it. She “suggested” what he should wear, which left the groom frustrated.

London – The wedding of Prince William (40) and Kate Middleton (41) went smoothly and went down in history as a dream wedding. Reported now Prince Harry (38) in his memoir “Spare” that there was a lot of commotion behind the scenes leading up to the big day before the beautiful bride in the perfect Alexander McQueen dress stood next to her husband in a stark contrast to the groom’s bright red military uniform and enchanted everyone .

Prince William was frustrated that he wasn’t given a choice at his wedding

In his work, the Duke of Sussex divulges that William actually wanted to wear something different on his big day – but his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II (96, † 2022) rejected his wish. Now, as a royal, you are restricted enough as far as the outfit is concerned and, according to the protocol, you have to get married in a military uniform. But even with the uniform he didn’t have a free choice.

“Willy was grumpy because he had so little say in what he wore at his wedding because he was deprived of his autonomy on such an occasion. He has told me several times that he feels frustrated.” Harry speaks frankly about his brother’s feelings.

Williams and Kate’s wedding was a happy day for Queen Elizabeth II.

Royal author Andrew Morton (70), known for his 1992 biography of Princess Diana (36, † 1997), said the Queen was downright euphoric on her grandson’s wedding day.

He wrote: “The Queen was moved on the day of her grandson’s wedding, one observer said, and was absolutely delighted with the way the public had reacted to the royal couple.”

In his eyes it was a milestone that the Queen achieved for the future: “She felt that the future of the royal family, her family, was now secure. The monarchy again enjoyed the admiration and affection of the masses”.

As an heir, the Queen had decreed that he had no free choice

It is tradition for members of the royal family to wear a military uniform on their wedding day. The Prince of Wales originally opted for his Household Cavalry frock coat uniform. William’s choice makes perfect sense because it was the uniform he “grew into”. After 44 weeks of training, he enlisted in the Blues and Royals Army in December 2006 as an officer. A year later he was promoted to lieutenant and remained with the unit until being promoted to search and rescue pilot in 2009.

But the monarch had other plans. Not at all enthusiastic about William’s choice, she suggested the Irish Guards uniform instead. With foresight she had made her grandson head of the Irish a few months before the wedding. It was the Prince’s first honorable appointment in the army.

Reflecting on his brother’s disappointment, Harry writes: He had asked his grandmother if he could wear his “deserved” uniform and she had turned him down. As an heir, he had no free choice, she had decreed. In the years after his exit from the royal family, he had always emphasized the freedom he had gained and the “unfreedom” of the royals, which was also reflected in his family also reflected in Harry’s allegations in “Spare”..
