Oscar Academy launches campaign to raise USD 500 million

THE ANGELS.- Los producers of the movies James Bond will receive the Oscar honorific in the traditional special ceremony in November, announced the Academia this Wednesday, amid growing expectations about who will play the next agent 007.

Half-siblings Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli run the successful espionage franchise since the film 007: GoldenEye, in 1995, after receiving it from Broccoli’s father, Albert.

They oversaw some of the series’ most notable films, including 007: Operation Skyfall (2012), which raked in $1 billion at the box office and in which Daniel Craig played the seductive British spy with a license to kill.

“The recognition is a record of their success as producers of the fan-favorite Bond series and their contribution to the film industry,” Academy President Janet Yang said in a statement.

The tribute comes at a crucial time for the famous spy.

The latest installment of Bond, No time to die (2021), was the last film starring Craig, whose replacement has not yet been announced. Also after this premiere, Amazon bought MGM, the studio that was in charge of 007. Eon, the Broccoli family company that has strong control over the creative aspect of the franchise, originally based on the novels by Ian Fleming, continues in silence about the future of the series.

Recognition

Wilson and Broccoli will receive their honorary Oscars at a ceremony in Los Angeles in November alongside the likes of Quincy Jones and Richard Curtis.

Jones was nominated for an Oscar seven times for his work in films such as Cold-blooded, The magician y The color purple, but he never won. In 1967, he was the first black composer to be nominated in the original song category for the film Buy me that man.

The British director Richard Curtis, 67, has in his catalog Notting Hill, The diaryof Bridget Jones, Really love y Four Weddings and a Funeral. The last one earned him his only nomination, for best screenplay.

Co-founder of Comic Relief, which raises money for charity, Curtis will be honored with the Jean Hersholt statuette, dedicated to the humanitarian work of film personalities.

The honorary Oscars are presented annually at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ so-called Governors Awards, which honor lifetime achievements, and became a standalone event in 2009 to decongest the main awards show.

The 15th Governors’ Awards Ceremony will be held on November 17.
