Finance Minister Lindner showed face for a bank that apparently granted him a lavish loan. This is what one of the promotional videos looked like.
Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner has been criticized. His apparently close ties to the Karlsruher BBBank are now a case for the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office. In a video celebrating the bank’s 100th anniversary, Lindner said he liked the bank “from the ground up.” The same bank granted him according to “Spiegel” information later a loan of millions for a two-family house in the south of Berlin. The public prosecutor is now investigating whether there is an initial suspicion of corruption. Lindner is threatened with the lifting of his immunity.
A public official who accepts an advantage for the performance of his duties is punishable by imprisonment for up to three years or a fine, according to Section 331. Lending can certainly be such an advantage. It is sufficient if the advantage is granted for the general performance of the service. A small thank you, a belated donation – all of this is subject to the accusation of the so-called unlawful agreement. It’s not just the greeting for the anniversary of the cooperative bank. Lindner had always shown face for the bank before. It’s about well-paid lectures and appearances at events, but also about videos. One of these commercials can still be seen on the website of the production company “Prestigefilm”. The company produced the article entitled “Christian Lindner: ‘I love my freedom'” at the end of August 2018 for a new BBBank customer magazine. At that time, Lindner was the federal chairman of the FDP and member of the German Bundestag.

Lindner is casual in the video, wears a white T-shirt and a dark cardigan and is standing in a residential area in Düsseldorf. A playground can be seen in the background. The video is about Lindner’s departure from home at the age of 18 financial independence and the understanding he has for self-employed people who still don’t have an order in their pocket even after the tenth call. “Our country has so many opportunities if you seize them. Sure, you need courage.” But it is better to do 80 percent than to wait for 100 percent, says Lindner. He loves his own freedom, including the financial one, “not having to say thank you to anyone”.
