Protests on Peru's Independence Day lead to clashes with the Police

Drafting.- Groups of Peruvian demonstrators protested in the center of Lima against President Dina Boluarte and, shortly after the mobilization began, the first clashes with the National Police were recorded, which fired tear gas against it.

“Long live the struggle of the original peoples”, “People listen, join the fight”, “Dina murders the people of repudiation”, “Dina to jail, (Pedro) Castillo to the (Government) Palace”, were some of the claims that were heard this Friday morning through the streets of the historic center of the Peruvian capital, strongly guarded by the Police.

The protesters were called by various unions, student organizations and groups this Friday morning in Plaza Dos de Mayo, while President Boluarte participated in official activities to commemorate the 202nd anniversary of independence.

A few hours after the start of the marches, the first clashes between the protesters and the Police were reported, who were trying to prevent their passage to squares and strategic streets close to state institutions such as the Government Palace or Congress.

Some protesters broke the police cordon between the University Park and Abancay avenue, threw objects and attacked the agents with various objects.

In response, the police fired buckshot and tear gas at the protesters, who sometimes returned these devices to the security forces.

Local media recorded that the independent reporter Juan Zapata was injured by a pellet in the leg.

The protest, called the “National March” calls for the resignation of Bolaurte, the closure of Congress and also justice for those who died in the demonstrations that shook the country from December to March and in which a total of 77 people died, according to various sources. .

The Police announced this week that it was going to deploy a device of 30,000 agents in Metropolitan Lima to control these marches during this Friday and Saturday of National Holidays.

Meanwhile, Boluarte gave the traditional speech for independence in Congress, in which, on behalf of the State, he apologized to the relatives of those who died in the anti-government protests that shook the country since December 2022.

He also assured that “there were no winners or losers” in these demonstrations and proposed “signing a reconciliation pact, a pact for life, for peace, for justice, for equality.”
