As the Japanese firm recently claimed, it is indeed becoming easier and easier to get a next-gen console. The year 2023 could therefore definitively mark the end of the shortage of the PS5. Players should soon be able to afford a PS5 as easily as any other console. Moreover, Sony could announce the second generation of the PS5 in April before preparing the PS6. A single model would be available for sale in order to optimize production and avoid any shortages.

PS5 sales are up 82% in the holiday quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021

From October to December 2022, Sony sold 7.1 million PS5s. By comparison, 3.9 million consoles were sold during the same period in 2021. So that represents an 82% increase in PlayStation 5 sales year-over-year. These 7.1 million PS5s sold in a single quarter represent 28% of all PS5s sold since the release of the next-gen console in November 2020.

Sales of the PS5 have also led to a strong revenue boost for Sony. Sony’s Game & Network Services arm reported approximately 8.9 billion euros in the last quarter of 2022. This figure is up 53% compared to the same period in 2021.

In any case, Sony could soon achieve its sales forecast for fiscal year 2022 which will end in March 2023. The Japanese firm must sell 18 million next-gen consoles to achieve this goal. He thus has 5.2 million PS5 left to sell to reach the forecasts. If Sony achieves its goal, the PS5 will have sold out more than 37 million copies by the end of the fiscal year.
