Sony is reportedly working on a device to play your PS5 games without a console. Perhaps the return of an abandoned service?

Spotted by Gamerant, Sony would have updated one of its patents suggesting that it would be working on a brand new system allowing PS5 games to be played on any medium, such as Microsoft with its famous Xbox Everywhere policy. .

PS5 Everywhere

Whereas lately, Microsoft has been trying to copy the competition, this time it’s Sony who is looking to grab ground on its adversary’s market. According to the latest patent, the manufacturer is preparing a big surprise for its players by developing an “intercommunication device for streaming games (Cloud)”. On paper, this system should allow players to launch their games from compatible connected screens, such as certain televisions for example. A functionality identical to that found at Xbox with the Xbox Cloud Gaming application available on Samsung TVs.

The return of PlayStation Now?

The objective here would therefore be to extend the player base by offering a catalog of streaming games directly on TVs and other compatible screens, without the need for PS5. What is surprising, however, is that Sony once again mentions PlayStation Now, which suggests that the patent is not new, but indeed renewed. The PlayStaiton Now has indeed been removed following the overhaul of PS Plus subscriptions and it would be amazing to see it return as it was before.

As usual, a patent filing or a renewal does not necessarily mean that the feature will arrive in the near future, it does not even guarantee that it will see the light of day. It nevertheless allows to have an idea of what is going on at the manufacturer and testifies to its desire to extend its offer beyond its simple proprietary ecosystem, as Microsoft does with its Xbox brand. The two giants have not finished fighting.
