Puerto Rico on flood alert for Franklin

San Juan.- The National Weather Service (SNM) in San Juan issued a flood warning this Monday for several municipalities in the southeast of Puerto Rico, which is pending the effects of Tropical Storm Franklin.

The municipalities that could be affected by the floods today are Naguabo, Patillas, Humacao, Juncos, Las Piedras, Maunabo, San Lorenzo and Yabucoa, according to the SNM on its social networks.

In the case of Naguabo, the warning is for “life-threatening flash floods and landslides,” which would impact highways and low-lying urban areas.

The meteorological agency did not rule out that these floods cause the closure of roads.

The rest of the municipalities may experience urban flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas, as well as an increase in streams and storm surges.

The Emergency Management Bureau already warned yesterday that, although Franklin will not have a direct impact on Puerto Rico, it will leave heavy rains in its wake.

The SNM reported that up to four inches (101 millimeters) of rain are expected on this day, mostly through the south of the island.

The agency also indicated that Franklin, the sixth tropical storm of this season in the Atlantic basin, slows down over the waters of the Caribbean.

It is located about 240 miles (390 kilometers) south of Santo Domingo, moving west at 6 miles per hour (9 kilometers/hour) and has maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour (85 kilometers/hour).

For its part, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) of the Dominican Republic placed on alert this Monday the 31 provinces of the country and the National District (downtown Santo Domingo), 14 of them in red (including the capital), 10 in yellow and 8 in green.
