During the CES2023 – the biggest technology event on the planet – Qualcomm has launched a two-way satellite messaging system for premium smartphones. The Snapdragon Satellite will provide global connectivity via text messages. The idea is to offer emergency communication in wild, distant and remote places. The technology will be used in devices equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and later.

As a differential, Qualcomm announced the partnership with companies like Iridium and Garmin, powerhouses in the GPS world, to provide satellite contact and communication for Android users in environments where signal and coverage “went with God”.

Satellite connection needs open sky

User will have to adjust the alignment with the satellite to be able to send the message

Traveling through the interior, you must have already walked there or here in order to find a cell phone antenna pin and thus make a call, right? Well, the emergency SMS system via satellite also needs favorable conditions to work correctly, such as clear skies, the smartphone in a prominent position for perfect alignment and then yes, messages of up to 160 characters can be sent to a list default contacts.

Snapdragon Satellite beyond cell phones

Qualcomm also said the technology could be extended to notebooks, tablets, cars and IoT, as the Snapdragon Satellite grows and developers begin to explore satellite connectivity for their brands.

A very similar feature was released by Apple alongside the iPhone 14. Rumors also indicate that Samsung will have its own emergency SMS feature for Galaxy S23 devices – that’s because Qualcomm has guaranteed that the technology will come in the second half of the year and we all hope the S23 before that.
