The rapeseed blossom has begun across Germany. The Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants e. V. (UFOP) points out the importance of rapeseed for the regional recycling economy and as an important raw material for animal nutrition. Rapeseed is currently blooming in all its glory on an area of around 1.2 million hectares, not only offering an impressive natural spectacle, but also a sustainable alternative to imported animal feed. Stephan Arens, Managing Director of UFOP, explains: “Rapeseed provides the raw material for the production of rapeseed cooking oil and biodiesel. What is often overlooked, however, is the importance of rapeseed cultivation for animal nutrition. Rapeseed is an important protein source for feeding livestock and thus helping to reduce the need for imported soybeans.” The cultivation and processing of rapeseed will produce around 2.5 million tons of protein feed from domestic cultivation this year. Every ton of rapeseed feed substitutes soy protein, which would have to be imported from South America instead. This reduces transport routes and CO2 emissions. In addition, in contrast to imported soybeans, plants grown in Germany are generally free of genetic engineering, which means that the feedstuffs can be used, e.g. B. allowed when feeding dairy cows whose milk is sold with the label “Ohne Gentechnik”. Stephan Arens concludes by emphasizing: “We should be aware that by producing feedstuffs such as rapeseed regionally, we not only support our farmers, but also make an important contribution to sustainability and climate protection.”
