Juarez City.— In five years, the crime of rape went from the third to the first cause for which adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 serve a sentence in the Comprehensive Criminal Justice System for Adolescents (SIJPA).

According to the National Survey of Adolescents in the Justice System of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), in 2017 the main crime sentenced in this section of the population was robbery, with 37.8 percent, while the cases of rape corresponded to 12.5 percent.

During 2022, of the population of adolescents in the Comprehensive Criminal Justice System that was prosecuted, 72.1 percent only had a public defender during the judicial process. On the other hand, 17.7 percent of the population with a sanction measure only had a private defense attorney; Of these, 93.1 percent declared that the person who defended them explained the facts for which they were accused.

In this context, of the adolescents in the SIJPA with a sanction measure, less than half felt very heard by the judge during their trial. On the other hand, only 36.2 percent considered that their sanction measure was very fair.

Of the population of adolescents in the SIJPA with an internment measure who carried out socio-educational activities, 77.3 percent attended a workshop to learn a trade.
