Ratatouille, awarded the 2008 Golden Globe for best animated film, features Rémy, a young rat who dreams of being a chef, and whose recipe for ratatouille seems irresistible. Set primarily in Paris, Pixar’s masterpiece reveals dreamlike imagery and storyline, taking the viewer on a culinary journey full of flavor. Directed by Brad Bird, already Oscar winner in 2005 for The Incredibles, animated feature film is broadcast this Friday, December 30, 2022, at 9:10 p.m. on M6.
Skinner: a very inspiring character
While Rémy is in total admiration in front of chef Gusteau, the latter is replaced by his second in his restaurant after his death. Skinner then became the chef of the starred Parisian restaurant, with a completely different state of mind than his predecessor. Greedy for money and power, this balding little man takes a dislike to Alfredo Linguini, a young recruit in his kitchens. For this severe character, bringing together a good number of bad values, the film crew, in which humans have no toes, was inspired by a legend of French cinema: Louis de Funès, “very controlling father“, for his physical appearance but also for his way of being. Skinner is indeed very angry, and he does not hesitate, just like the actor in his films, to use body language excessively. The director declared s also be inspired by the character of Salieri, a composer jealous of Mozart in the film Amadeusand Chief Inspector Dreyfus from the series The pink Panther. As for the name of the Skinner character, it is a claimed homage to Burrhus Frederic Skinner, an American psychologist, famous in particular for his scientific experiments on laboratory rats.

The kitchen at heart film preparation
For the needs of the film, Brad Bird and his team went to eat in several starred restaurants, and not just any. On the program: the Procope, the Tour d’Argent, at Taillevent, Chez Michel or at Hélène Darroze (who even inspired the character of Colette!). A rather attractive project! In addition, to illustrate the kitchen of the restaurant Chez Gusteau, the decorating chef reveals to have visit “a large number of kitchens in France“. And if the food looks as realistic as it looks appetizing in the picture, the Pixar team has done a lot of groundwork. Thus, they have prepared nearly 270 dishes themselves in a real kitchen. They then took photos of them to be able to recreate them as accurately as possible on the computer.
