Ravaging fire at electric bike shop kills 4, injures several in NYC

NEW YORK — A raging fire early Tuesday morning at an electric bike shop in Manhattan killed four people and injured five others, including two in critical condition, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 12:13 am in the bicycle sales and repair business located in the lower part of the 6-story building that is located on the corner of the streets Madison and Catherine in Lower Manhattan. The flames spread to the upper floors.

The incident was so intense that many of the windows melted.

Two men, one of them 71 years old, and two women lost their lives. Five other people were injured, including two who are in critical condition in area hospitals.

The Red Cross for its part announced that it is providing assistance to 23 adults and 2 children affected by the fire.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
