ANDwriter, journalist and feminist, Maria Lamas, who stood out in the struggle for women’s rights, wrote, in the 1940s, the book ‘As Mulheres do meu País’, a portrait of the condition of Portuguese women in the first half of the 20th century, as lived and worked.

For this work, Maria Lamas traveled the country between 1947 and 1949, going to various locations from north to south and islands, to portray the difficulties that women went through and the particularities of their lives.

Maria Lamas had just been removed from the magazine Modas e Bordados, and the National Council of Portuguese Women, which she directed, had been closed down.

With no job prospects, no support, no publisher, he set up a society to publish ‘As Mulheres do meu country’, work with which he intended to show that, contrary to what the government proclaimed, women were not protected.

The work was published in installments between 1948 and 1950, then collected in a single volume and re-edited in 2002 by Caminho, having been out of print for a long time.

These fascicules will now be published again, on the order of one per month, as originally, in a joint initiative by A Bela e o Monstro and the Público newspaper, with no date yet announced.
