Relatives and friends of Cubans detained and in danger of imminent deportation held a protest on Sunday in front of the emblematic Versailles restaurant in Miami.

Carrying Cuban and United States flags, the protesters demanded an end to the returns to the island and pointed out that among those detained there are some who have been in the country for four years, who have not even received a traffic ticket.

“They want to make another political prisoner in Cuba. The deportations must be stopped,” shouted Ana, the aunt of one of the migrants at risk of deportation. “We are all Cubans, we have to fight for a free Cuba and to stop the deportations,” she added.

Part of the protest was broadcast by the journalist from Univision Javier Díaz, on his Facebook wall.

“What I want is freedom for all of you, so that you stop this torture that you are doing, to all of you and to us, the families…”, stressed the woman.

Last week, the US government returned 36 Cubans to the island, in what constituted the third flight of this type carried out by the Biden administration in just two months.

In the group was Reinier Gutiérrez, a father of two children, one of them barely three months old and health problems.

“They had no mercy, they had nothing with a child who is an American citizen, who has diseases. My grandfather, who is an elderly person and is an American citizen, and all those people depend on me,” questioned the young man from Havana, in statements to journalist Javier Díaz.

Gutiérrez had been held by the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since May 11, when he appeared at a detention center in Miramar. He entered the country in 2020 through the southern border, and the authorities imposed a 220A order (immediate deportation) on him.
