Denver.
Almost 80 peaks around 4000 meters attract hordes of tourists to the Rocky Mountains. Now a reservation system is supposed to direct the flow of visitors.

Rocky Mountain National Park in northern Colorado introduces a reservation system. Visitors must book slots online between May 26 and October 22, 2023 if they want to visit the park at specific times, the Colorado Tourism Bureau said. This is intended to better direct the flow of visitors to the park.

Reservations are still not required for tourists in the state’s other three national parks — Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Great Sand Dunes, and Mesa Verde.

Reservation information

Details on the new reservation system in Rocky Mountain National Park can be found on the national park website nps.gov/romo.

Reservations are $2 per car and must be made through the government travel planning platform recreation.org book. The tourist office writes of a “pilot project”.

Park passes available to purchase on site

Weekly passes ($35 per car) for the national park or annual passes for all national parks in the USA ($80 per car) can also be bought locally at the entrances to the national park. The east entrance is in Estes Park, about an hour and a half drive northwest of Denver. The western entrance is at Grand Lake.

The Trail Ridge Road, which runs through the park, is the highest continuously paved pass road in the USA, according to the tourist office. Its highest point is 3713 meters. You also drive over the continental divide. The water to the east of it flows into the Atlantic, to the west of it flows into the Pacific. (dpa)
