Restaurant roof collapses on Georgetown firefighters

The roof of an Italian restaurant collapsed on first responders as they battled a “difficult and stubborn” fire inside the Georgetown business Thursday afternoon, firefighters said.

Two officials suffered minor injuries while responding to the fire at Ristorante Piccolo DC, Fire Chief John Donnelly said. All the rescuers inside managed to escape when the roof collapsed and the two injuries were not related to the collapse, he added.

The fire broke out around 12:30 p.m., according to authorities. Smoke could be seen coming from the roof of the restaurant.

Fire Department spokesman Vito Maggiolo said the fire started in a storage room behind the business. Officials evacuated the building.

Donnelly said shortly after 2:30 p.m. that the fire was under control.

So far the cause of the accident is unknown.
