Gelsenkirchen-Buer.
The market hall in Gelsenkirchen-Buer will soon be empty again: the organic supermarket Denns, the only tenant, will close at the end of this week.

It’s not a surprise – at least the timing. The branch of the organic supermarket Denns in the market hall in Gelsenkirchen-Buer will close at the end of this week. As already reported, Denns had terminated the lease at the end of April 2023, and Saturday is the last day of sale. This means that the market hall is empty again after only two and a half years – as in previous years.

Flashback: In August 2020, bunches of green and red balloons hung over the entrance to the market hall. The Denns branch in Buer opened its doors, ending a long period of vacancy in the former flagship property in the north of the city. The market hall had led a shadowy existence for five years, these times, it seemed in 2020, should be over. Because the opening of the organic supermarket branch should only be the first step: other restaurants should follow suit and fill the market hall with life again.

That is why Denns was critical of the Gelsenkirchen-Buer site

However: that did not happen. The opening of the catering establishments – a sushi bar, an Italian restaurant and a sports bar were planned, among other things – was repeatedly postponed. At Denns, people had probably imagined things differently, and critical tones came from the group’s headquarters in southern Germany early on. A Denns spokeswoman told the editorial team in July 2021 that the development in the market hall is being observed “very closely”: It is regrettable “that the planned development of the site environment into a well-frequented meeting place has not shown any significant progress to date. The surrounding vacancies and the ongoing construction site character of the market hall meet neither our expectations of an attractive atmosphere nor those of our customers.”

In September 2022, Denns intensified the criticism again: “Unfortunately, the market hall does not meet the expectations of an attractive shopping atmosphere,” said regional manager André Mory at the time. “This is particularly unfortunate for our customers.” At the time, that sounded like the impending farewell, and that’s exactly what happened: At the end of October, Denns announced the closure of its branch.

At the end of the week the time had come, the customers were informed about the end with a notice in the branch. Spicy at first glance: Recently, there were business cards on the Denns shelves that referred to the other Buersche organic supermarket on Horster Strasse/corner of Romanusstrasse. Posters in front of the Denns branch also informed that Buer was not without an organic supermarket even after the Denns exit. “That was agreed with Denns,” says Linus Weistropp, spokesman for Superbiomarkt AG. “We have always maintained a good and open relationship with one another.”
