Over the whole of the 1st quarter of 2023, the number of fatalities (641) fell by 9% and the number of seriously injured (3,001) fell by 6% compared to the same period a year earlier, specifies the Observatory. national interministerial road safety (ONISR) in a press release.
“We note in particular a drop in the number of cyclists killed (-10 killed), motorists killed (-11%) and young people killed (-51%)”, he continues. The ONISR also counts 1,031 serious injuries, down 15% compared to March 2022. Overall, the number of injury accidents recorded by the police stood at 3,777 in March this year.
Higher cycling mortality
Road Safety notes that “travel and accident rates have returned to a rate close to that before the pandemic (of Covid-19) or even higher, with sometimes changes linked to new habits”.
She thus notes that cycling mortality is “far higher than that of the year 2019”, the last pre-pandemic year, with “236 cyclists who have died in the last 12 months, i.e. + 26% compared to 2019”.
“The mortality in EDPm (Motorized personal transport devices, of the scooter type) has increased sharply in the last 12 months. Thirty-three people have died in the past year”, she concludes.
