Brittany, Normandy, Pays-de-la-Loire… A study reveals the regions and departments most affected by speeding checks by mobile radars and those where motorists most often exceed the authorized speed.

It’s a first. It is now possible to know where speeding checks carried out by mobile speed cameras are most often carried out, by road and department, reveals Friday The Parisianaccording to figures from the Department of Automated Control.

Mobile radars, allowing speeding to be detected from unmarked cars circulating on the roads, have been gradually deployed in recent years in 39 test departments. In almost half of the departments, the driving of these cars has been entrusted since 2021 to private operators.

North West most often controlled

The figures reveal that, among the 39 departments tested, motorists are most often flashed in the North West of the country. This trend is not so much linked to the driving habits of the inhabitants of these regions as to the fact that the deployment of mobile speed cameras began in this part of France from 2018.

In detail, the departments with the most checks are in particular Manche and Ille-et-Vilaine, with more than 400,000 checks per year each. Finistère, Morbihan and Seine-Maritime all have more than 300,000 annual checks.

Conversely, the departments of the East and South-West are the least at risk of being flashed by an on-board radar. Haute-Marne has less than 8,000 inspections per year. The South-East is not concerned, the radar cars having not been deployed there until now.

Donkey cap for the Landes and the Somme

And who are the worst students? Still according to figures from the Department of Automated Control, they are found on the roads of the Landes and the Somme, where there are nearly 15% of checks 10% higher than the speed limit.

Good point, however, for motorists in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais, where only 6% of checks of 10% at the maximum authorized speed were noted.

Overall, more than 7 out of 10 drivers (72%) drive within the authorized limits. 1 in 10 exceed the limits, beyond the authorized technical margin, and risk being fined.
