The Sudanese rebel group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has said it has agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire. “The ceasefire coincides with the blessed Muslim festival of sacrifice, Eid al-Fitr,” the militia said.

Meanwhile, the capital Khartoum was rocked again today by bombing and artillery fire. The Sudanese army made no comment. Ruler General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan made no mention of a ceasefire in a pre-recorded speech posted to the army’s Facebook page.

At least 350 people have been killed in the violent power struggle between Burhan and the head of the RSF militia, General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who was once his ally. The latest violence was sparked by a dispute over the RSF’s incorporation into the military as part of Sudan’s transition to civilian rule. The military staged a coup in October 2021 and has ruled the north-east African country ever since.
