Miami.- The Silver Arrows set the pace in the first free practice session of the Miami Grand Prix.
4 minutes from the end of the session, in the Mercedes garage they opted to put on the red tires to register the best time with George Russell, who stopped the clock in 1’30″125.
Lewis Hamilton, with a record in the last sector, was 2 tenths of a second behind his teammate, which confirms the success of the German team’s strategy when testing medium and soft tires.
Ferrari, which came with updates to the floor of the car, little by little has found the formula to replicate the speed in one lap and in long runs. The Italian team secured third and fifth place with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr., respectively.
Red Bull suffered in the end on the red tyres, as they wore down quickly from the high temperatures and were unable to replicate Mercedes’ lap times.
Max Verstappen took fourth place, while Sergio Pérez did struggle to find his balance in his car, finishing in 11th position.
Nico Hülkenberg was one of the drivers who most surprised with the performance of his Haas, getting into second place for a few minutes, until he lost control of his car and crashed into the wall, causing the red flag.
