Russia charges espionage against US citizen already serving prison sentence for bribery

MADRID, 18 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Lefortovo Court in Moscow (Russia) has accused the American citizen of Russian origin Gene Spector of espionage, who is already in prison for a bribery case.

“The court granted the request of the investigation to detain the American citizen Spector on charges related to article 276 (espionage) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation,” a court source told the TASS news agency.

Spector is currently in jail serving a three-and-a-half-year sentence for mediating the transfer of bribes to Anastasia Alekseeva, a former aide to former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich.

According to TASS, investigations into the case found that Alekseeva received bribes worth 4 billion rubles (about 39 million euros) in exchange for shares in favor of the briber while she was Dvorkovich’s assistant.

Among the payments there were vacation trips to Thailand or the Dominican Republic whose tickets and vouchers cost 2 million rubles (about 20,000 euros) each.

Spector was born and raised in the Russian city of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), although he ended up moving to the United States, where he obtained citizenship and where he served as chairman of the board of directors of the Medpolymerprom group of companies, specializing in cancer drugs. .
