The partners of the International Space Station ISS have agreed to extend the operating time. As the NASA reportsthe ISS is supposed to 2030 remain the outpost of humanity. Russia has agreed to until 2028 assume operational functions.

After the beginning of war in Ukraine Russia announced its withdrawal from the ISS. A little later, it was then admitted that it would remain involved (more on this here). All partners have contracts that bind them to perform their tasks on the ISS. Russia is about for that steering, eg in the case of evasive manoeuvres. The ISS can only be operated if all partners do their part.

total are 5 space agencies represented on the ISS:

  • NASA (USA)
  • ESA (Europa)
  • Roscosmos (Russia)
  • JAXA (Japan)
  • CSA (You have)

NASA said it is working with partners to keep the station operational. This is to enable a safe transition to future commercial space stations. How this is supposed to work without Russia or whether Russia will guarantee the security of the ISS beyond 2028 remains unclear.

research station

NASA is investing in the development of several private space stations. Currently there are 3 stations von Northrup Grumman, Blue Origin and Nanoracks in the development. Together with the ESA, the construction of the Lunar Gateway planned. The station is intended to enable research, but also to function as a stopover to the moon and Mars.

Since her Start 1998 have 266 people out of 20 countries visited the ISS. Experiments are carried out in weightlessness at the research station. This led to new discoveries in the fields of biology, physics and medicine. So far, crew members have more than 3,300 try performed in microgravity.
