The first deputy secretary of the party calls on all “elected officials, activists, sympathizers, humanists who refuse to give in to the intimidation of the National Rally” to join the rally.

The PS calls for a symbolic march on May 24 in Saint-Brevin, in support of mayor Yannick Morez, who resigned after threats linked to a project to transfer a reception center for asylum seekers, announced Thursday the first deputy secretary of the PS Johanna Rolland.

“We are calling for a big march, a big rally, in Saint-Brevin (Loire-Atlantique) on May 24, in the afternoon,” said the mayor of Nantes, on BFMTV.

“When what happened in Saint-Brevin, the whole Republic backs down,” she said, inviting “all elected officials attached to the values of the Republic, activists, sympathisers, all the humanists who refuse to give in to the intimidation of the National Rally”, to be “many” that day.

This call is launched jointly with the first secretary of the PS Olivier Faure and the first deputy vice-president of the Association of mayors of France André Laignel, she specified.

“No one should accept that a mayor (…) can be intimidated”

In a press release, all three stress that the resignation of the mayor “is a wake-up call for all Republicans”.

“No one should accept that a mayor who fulfills his duty of brotherhood by hosting a place of accommodation for asylum seekers, can be intimidated and suffer the burning of his own house”, they affirm, regretting that the State, “after having been alerted, did not react by leaving this elected official alone in the face of the threat from the far right”.

Deploring that “the trivialization of the parliamentary extreme right has liberated throughout the country, the speech and henceforth the action of individuals or groups who feel entitled to spread the venom of racism”, they affirm: “we do not we won’t let it pass”.

Welcoming a mayor who “has been the honor of the Republic”, Johanna Rolland felt that “an elected official should never be forced to choose between protecting his family and exercising his public mandate”.
