Fast Pairs is the function present on some Android smartphones that facilitates the configuring new devices such as earphones and Wear OS smartwatches. In practice, the new devices in the vicinity are immediately detected and a pop-up / shortcut is immediately shown from which to pair quickly. This way, the user won’t have to dive into any menus before being able to use the new accessories.

The news of the last few days is that the Fast Pair function could soon be extended to the smartphones. This means that a new smartphone could be configured quickly from an old one, provided of course that both devices belong to the Android ecosystem.

The first series of smartphones to implement this feature will most likely be that of Samsung Galaxy S23. To access the new device, simply scan a QR code and all necessary configuration data will automatically be transmitted from one phone to another.

9to5Google found strings of code in the latest version of Google Play Services which reveal it clearly. The devices to be added to Fast Pair would not be just smartphones, however: Google, in fact, is already working to make Fast Pair support even wider, also including stylus and tracking tag. We already know that Google is planning to launch its own “AirTag”, which for now – internally – is called “grogu” and on which relatively little is known yet (we told you about it here).

The technology behind Fast Pair would also be useful for show low battery alertsand this is especially true for styluses, whose state of charge is always difficult to determine.

At this time, Google doesn’t confirm that it has plans for these revisions. The code, however, speaks clearly (at least according to ours source). We await the release of the Galaxy S23 to learn more and perhaps test this new configuration mode.
