See what are the sales tax-free days in Maryland

At a time when inflation is on the rise, Maryland announced tax-free days so families can do their back-to-school shopping.

The suspension of this charge will be in effect from Sunday, August 13, 2023 until Saturday the 19th, according to the Maryland Comptroller.

“If you are going to buy shirts, pants, sweaters, jackets; all this goes in If the price is less than $100, they will be tax free. If the price is over $100, they will no longer qualify. Now, they can buy all the items they want that are less than $100,” explained Adriana Lee, the agency’s Hispanic liaison.

The discount is not limited to students since it applies to everyone equally, but there are exceptions in the items you can buy. Handbags, accessories, alterations to clothing and raw materials for sewing are some products that do not qualify for the exemption.

“The first $40 of the price of that backpack are the ones that will be tax free. If the backpack costs $60 or $70, it is only the first $40 that is free, the others are going to pay taxes. The same with shoes: if the shoes are less than $100 they are also tax free,” Lee said.

According to the Maryland Taxes website, stores will be able to accept rebate coupons for items over $100. Click here for more.
