From the monastery to the castle

The aim of our excursion led by Dr. Wolfgang Scheffknecht was the castle and the former Salem monastery. In the 11th century Founded by the Cistercians and abolished in 1803, the buildings with the church, cloisters, stables, workshops and abbot’s apartment still show the monastic layout, although much was rebuilt in this ‘modern’ style in the Baroque period.

dr Scheffknecht, with his great knowledge of the history of the Lake Constance area, explained the conditions at that time with the numerous small and micro-states. The Salem Monastery was also a state of its own, subordinate only to the Emperor and the Pope.

After these intensive history lessons, the path continued with wonderful views of the lake to Nonnenhorn. In the Hornstein winery, OM Hans-Dieter Grabher made reservations for us and ordered a winemaker’s plate. We found the right wines in the extensive wine list.

Our thanks for this beautiful day goes to Hans-Dieter, Dr. Scheffknecht and driver Robert, who found his way to Salem despite many detours.
