Plans for America’s largest smart intersection have been revealed. Seoul Robotics is partnering with the Chattanooga Innovation Delivery and Performance Division and the University of Tennessee’s Center for Urban Informatics and Progress (CUIP) in Chattanooga to create the network. The Federal Highway Administration and the US Department of Transportation are funding the $4.5 million project. 86 new smart city intersections will be built between 2023 and 2024. When complete, the system will capture more than 100 intersections, covering the city’s entire downtown area, the largest IoT deployment of its kind in the United States.

Seoul Robotics hopes to use insights from data collected at intersections to determine the best locations for electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the city and streamline traffic management to reduce emissions and congestion. “Our work in Chattanooga will provide more than just insight into the city,” said William Muller, vice president of business development at Seoul Robotics. “We are generating a real-world, data-driven test environment for emissions management, pedestrian safety, electric vehicles, and more. With this scalable network of smart intersections, we are able to capture the most granular level 3D data.”

The project builds on Seoul Robotics’ existing partnership with CUIP. The partners previously created the first proprietary testbed, called the MLK Smart Corridor, in 2019. The project utilizes lidar sensors and Seoul Robotics’ 3D perception software SENSR to monitor and predict the movement of traffic and pedestrians in all weather conditions and identify potential accidents before they occur.

“Our collaboration with Seoul Robotics on the MLK Smart Corridor provided a whole new dimension of insight that exceeded our expectations,” said Dr. Mina Sartipi, Founding Director of CUIP. How to make cities safer, more efficient, healthier and smarter has led to many advancements for the people who live here.By expanding the execution of the project, we will not only position Chattanooga as a pioneer in smart city technology, but also provide Other cities across the U.S. create blueprints to harness the transformative power of 3D systems.”
