pearl, one of the most recent films by director Ti West, known for signing several horror productions, has finally arrived in Brazilian cinemas. The plot is a prequel to X: Mark of Deathwith its own identity and plenty of personality.

The film once again stars Mia Goth, an actress of Brazilian descent who delivers an acting class. Pearl is a character with characteristics that are more than disturbing, which makes the task of shocking, entertaining and even giving a few laughs of despair more difficult.

Warning: this article may contain Pearl spoilers!

pearl brings such disturbing moments of Mia Goth’s character that, at times, it is impossible not to laugh, even in a state of shock.

The protagonist is a person frustrated with her own life and difficult to live with. It’s as if in her brain there is a universe in which only she lives there, living in her own psychopathy, and opening the doors to danger.

Pearl’s Dream

Young Pearl, who lives with her parents on a farm, is married and her husband is away at war. The character’s lack of social tact even causes us a strangeness in relation to this information, as it is difficult to imagine her developing a romance with someone.

The relationship with her parents is not good at all and it’s like she lives in a prison run by her mother, since her father is sick and unable to do anything alone.

The film takes place around Pearl’s dream of being a Hollywood star, which was at the very beginning, back in the 1910s. The young woman, who works on the farm, got tired of just admiring the actresses she saw in the movies and decided to practice to audition for a musical. In addition to being talentless and naturally frightening, the aspiring actress must deal with her sister-in-law, who has the same desire.

The character’s psychopathy is transparent from the beginning to the end of Mia Goth’s performance, either by the mannerisms or by the weird moments that we see in the film, but taken seriously by her, such as the simulation of sex with a scarecrow. But it’s when the audition denial comes up that things start to get serious and Goth shows what he came for.

the horror

The feature features “gore” scenes from the beginning, but it is in the second half that things start to get even stranger. Ti West manages to make us nervous by bringing horror scenes that happen in the dark or in broad daylight, causing that nail-biting anxiety just knowing that what’s to come is not cool.

Characterization with more colorful tones and farm settings that bring peace, and even remind you of The Sound of Music, contrast perfectly with the slasher every time blood is spilled. But terror is also in every word and attitude of the protagonist, which surprises in several moments, such as a frightening and uncut monologue seen in the final moments of the film.

Pearl ends up discovering that the movie industry also relies on pornography, and this discovery is crucial to the plot’s relationship with X: Mark of Deathwhich takes place more than 60 years after pearl. Mia Goth delivers her best in two characters in both films, Pearl in the young and then much older version, and Maxine, who will still have more prominence in a third film.

The trilogy ends with MaXXXinewhich will accompany the character who survived the attacks of pearl, on an adventure into Hollywood adult cinema. The feature, also by Ti West, still does not have a release date.

Until then, you can watch X: Mark of Death at the Prime Video It is pearl in cinemas all over Brazil; secure your entry ingresso.com.
