At the November 12, 2019 the Disney Plus streaming platform was launched. The video-on-demand service of the Micky Maus group was able to inspire millions of fans right away thanks to its extensive portfolio of partly purchased, partly self-produced series and films – people were already counting in February 2021 nearly 100 million subscribers. Due to the bubbling monthly income, providers such as Netflix, Paramount, Max (formerly HBO max) or Amazon Prime are able to do one or the other experiment in addition to films and series in the classic style.
Disney: No experiments with Marvel in the cinema
With Wandavision, Disney was also extremely willing to experiment. The first series produced for Disney Plus presented a mix to an expectant audience Retro sitcom and mystery before, who didn’t want to fit into the typical superhero formula at all. The courage of the makers was rewarded, as Wandavision, starring Elizabeth Olsen, became a hit with critics and audiences alike.
It can be assumed that this form of narration would have had poor chances of being published as a cinema film. The budgets for production and subsequent marketing are too big. Marvel prefers to play it safe here, even if you don’t seem immune to flops like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Disney Plus: Marvel series becomes musical – Joker 2 as a model?
In DC, on the other hand, things are a little different. Due to the huge success of Joker (2019), the successor leans even further out of the window artistically and stages the potential blockbuster with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn as a musical. Whether this venture actually ignites with the audience or ends in a financial fiasco, will be from the October 03, 2024 show when Joker 2 starts in German cinemas.
Disney apparently does not take such a big risk when it comes to musicals and limits itself to such experiments on its own streaming service. According to the actress and singer Patti LuPone the upcoming Marvel series Agatha: Coven of Chaos will be heavily influenced by musical elements.
In the spin off too wall vision will lead actress Kathryn Hahn (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) and the rest of the cast perform songs written by Kristen and Bobby Lopez were written. The songwriting couple were also responsible for the catchy sitcom themes from Marvel’s Wandavision. Patti LuPone, by the way, as one of the most renowned Musical actresses in the world, clarifies in her interview that Agatha: Coven of Chaos will be a musical and not a CGI battle: “This show involves craftsmanship”. The release on DisneyPlus is planned for the end of 2023 or beginning of 2024.
