Pancreatic cancer is a condition considered silent by doctors. As the organ is not sensitive and the symptoms can be confused with those of other pathologies, the diagnosis tends to be late, giving time for the condition to become serious before any intervention.

“Cancer occurs when cells grow irregularly and form a tumour. Most of the time, it is diagnosed late because it is in an organ of little sensitivity and presents very nonspecific symptoms, such as stomach pain or back pain”, warns oncologist Márcio Almeida, from Oncoclínicas Brasília.

To help early diagnosis, the patient should be aware of some of the signs caused by the tumor. The doctor highlights the first five signs that pancreatic cancer can present:

1. Yellow skin

Several substances essential for the digestion and absorption of fats and some vitamins are produced in the pancreas, such as some hormones and bile. “The dark yellow liquid can be released into the bloodstream instead of the intestine due to a cellular disorder. This problem can cause a yellowish appearance on the patient’s skin”, says Almeida.

2. Change in stool and urine

If bile falls into the bloodstream, it will follow the same flow as the blood. That is, the substance will pass through the kidneys, leaving the urine dark. On the other hand, it does not go to the stomach, which causes the stool to look white.

3. Stomach pain

The irregular growth of the cells that make up the tissue of the pancreas forms a tumor that varies in size. “The organ is not very sensitive, so the tumor itself will not hurt. What will hurt is the compression it exerts on nearby nerves, causing stomach pain”, says Almeida.

4. Back pain

As with the stomach, the oncologist explains that the discomfort does not necessarily come from the tumor, but from the nerves it compresses. “As the cancer grows and spreads, it presses on more nerves, like those in the back, causing pain,” explains Almeida.

5. Sudden weight loss

Patients with pancreatic cancer may have little or no appetite, as enzymes are one of the types of substances that are affected by the tumor’s production. They help break down fats, carbohydrates and proteins.

“The imbalance of substances can also cause nausea and vomiting. That is, the patient, in addition to not feeling hungry, can expel the food that was poorly digested “, says the oncologist.
