Sixth journalist murdered in Mexico so far this year

Condemnation from the UN

The Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-DH) condemned the disappearance and subsequent murder of Martín Sánchez Iñiguez in the state of Nayarit, western Mexico, and the crimes committed against two other media collaborators.

In addition to the murder of Sánchez Iñiguez, he pointed out that the two other media contributors locals had also disappeared in the same area between July 3 and 7, although fortunately one of them was found alive on Saturday, July 8.

“The UN-DH calls for coordination between the authorities of the different levels to adopt the necessary measures to ensure the protection of the journalistic union of Nayarit,” the UN agency said in a statement.

According to the information received by the UN-DH, Sánchez Íñiguez disappeared from his home on the night of July 5, in the municipality of Xalisco, Nayarit. The kidnappers also took various work tools from the journalist.

The UN-DH asked the FGE to “consider that the main line of investigation is related to the journalistic work of the victims.”

According to the organization Article 19a total of 157 journalists have been assassinated in Mexico since 2000 in possible connection with their work.

Of this total, 47 murders were registered during the term of the previous president of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018), and 37 during the current term of Andrés Manuel López Obradorwho assumed power on December 1, 2018.
