Skin cancer is the most frequent type of disease in Brazil and in the world, with a higher incidence after 40 years of age. It can appear anywhere on the body, including fingernails and toenails.
The chances of cure for melanoma skin cancer – the most aggressive form – and non-melanoma are higher when the disease is detected and treated early. A American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)recommends that people also pay attention to signs that appear on the nails.
“When checking the body for signs of cancer, many people may only think of the skin. However, it’s important to look at the nails too,” states the AAD in the skin cancer guidelines.

Melanoma, in turn, has fewer registered cases and is more serious, due to the possibility of spreading to other parts of the body. That’s why it’s important to make periodic visits to the dermatologist and ask about suspicious signs.JUAN GAERTNER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/Getty Images

According to experts, it is important to investigate whenever a mole or mole has asymmetry, a rough or irregular edge, two or more colors, has a diameter greater than six millimeters, or changes in size over time. All of these signs can indicate the presence of a melanoma.kali9/Getty Images
The first signs of non-melanone tend to look like a discolored lump, spot or sore that does not heal and continues to grow. In addition, it may still look smooth and shiny and/or look like a wart.Peter Dazeley/Getty Images
The mole can cause itching, scabs, erosions, or bleeding over weeks or even years. In most cases, this cancer is red and firm and can develop into an ulcer. Marks look like scars and tend to be flat and scalyGetty Images

The diagnosis of skin cancer is made by the dermatologist through clinical examination. In certain situations, it may be necessary to carry out the exam known as “Dermoscopy”, which consists of using a device that allows you to visualize layers of the skin not seen with the naked eye. In more specific situations it is necessary to perform a biopsyNoctiluxx/Getty Images

5 symptoms of skin cancer on nails:
Dark band: the disease can manifest itself with a brown or black laying line on the nail. It can appear on any of the fingers, but is more common on the thumb or big toe;
Dark skin on the side of the nail: When the skin around the nail gets darker, it could be a sign of advanced melanoma.
Raised nail: Dermatologists explain that when this occurs, the nail starts to separate from the skin that attaches it to the finger. The free edge at the top of the nail starts to look longer as the nail is lifted.
Nail cracking: this phenomenon occurs when a nail splits in half;
Protuberance or nodule under the nails: they may be thicker or narrower, irregularly shaped and dark in color, for example.
