Skin cancer is the most frequent type of disease in Brazil and in the world, with a higher incidence after 40 years of age. It can appear anywhere on the body, including fingernails and toenails.

The chances of cure for melanoma skin cancer – the most aggressive form – and non-melanoma are higher when the disease is detected and treated early. A American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)recommends that people also pay attention to signs that appear on the nails.

“When checking the body for signs of cancer, many people may only think of the skin. However, it’s important to look at the nails too,” states the AAD in the skin cancer guidelines.

5 symptoms of skin cancer on nails:

  1. Dark band: the disease can manifest itself with a brown or black laying line on the nail. It can appear on any of the fingers, but is more common on the thumb or big toe;
  2. Dark skin on the side of the nail: When the skin around the nail gets darker, it could be a sign of advanced melanoma.
  3. Raised nail: Dermatologists explain that when this occurs, the nail starts to separate from the skin that attaches it to the finger. The free edge at the top of the nail starts to look longer as the nail is lifted.
  4. Nail cracking: this phenomenon occurs when a nail splits in half;
  5. Protuberance or nodule under the nails: they may be thicker or narrower, irregularly shaped and dark in color, for example.
