From January 1, 2024, speeding less than 5 km/h will no longer be penalized with the deduction of a point. Thanks to our calculator, you can simulate what you risk depending on the limit in force.

This was the announcement of the week, made by the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin: from January 1, 2024, excesses of less than 5 km / h on the speed retained by the radar will no longer be sanctioned with the withdrawal of a point, as is currently the case for all overruns of less than 20km/h.

The fine maintained

The fine is maintained, with the financial sanction which applies to excesses of less than 20km/h: in built-up areas, a fixed fine of 135 euros (90 euros minus) and outside agglomeration, a fine of 90 euros (68 euros minus).

Note also that this is indeed the speed used, i.e. corrected for the margin of error: it is 5 km/h lower than the speed recorded for speeds below 100 km/h , and 5% less above 100 km/h.

A tailor-made calculator

Not easy… To help you find your way around, we have a calculator. Test it to find out what you risk based on the speed recorded by the radar (before the correction of the margin of error).

A measure that still needs to be clarified

As a reminder, the measure must apply from January 1, 2024. Concretely, until then you will therefore always lose a point for any excess less than 20km/h, even if it is less than 5km/h compared to the limit. in force.

The implementing decrees will also have to specify the framework of this measure: will this end of the withdrawal of points for “small” excesses apply to professionals, to heavyweights?

The announcement of this decision has led to many reactions, from those who approve of it, as well as those who strongly criticize it.
