Ukraine’s participant in this year’s Eurovision song contest gave a concert in Kiev under adverse circumstances. Just before their scheduled performance at the city’s main train station yesterday, pop duo Tvorchi were forced into the basement by the sound of the air raid alarm. “It is what it is,” said musician Andrij Huzuljak after the sirens wailed, “we believe in our anti-aircraft defense.”

Singer Jeffery Kenny is already used to such interruptions: “We always have to come down and try to get to safety.”

The duo will represent Ukraine at next month’s song contest in Liverpool with their song “Heart of Steel”. Due to the Ukraine War, the event will be held in England, although Ukraine won last year.

“Honored and Delighted”

“We feel honored and excited to perform in Liverpool,” Huzuljak told AFP. “We can hardly wait to show everyone what we have prepared.” The duo does not want to be “pitied” at the ESC.

However: “The most important thing for us is to win the battle and have peace in the country,” said Huzuljak. If they still win and it’s possible to host Ukraine next year, “we’ll appreciate it and we’ll be happy.”

Yesterday the all-clear signal came in time for Tvorchi to give a surprise concert in the entrance hall of the Kiev train station.
