Looking back over the last twelve months, 2022 has produced more high-quality games than I initially thought. I myself play both the Microsoft Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5. However, I now have a gaming PC ready again, because I currently use it more for reporting and technical experiments than for relaxed gaming. In my heart I’ve probably stayed Consolero. And in this post, as in the last few years, I will present you with my top 5 PS5 games of the last 12 months.

To avoid controversy right away: This list is not objective in any way and is simply my personal taste. If your favorites are embezzled by me, please do not take it crooked. I would also like to point out that although gaming has been my hobby since childhood, I only have 24 hours a day and also have to work and sleep. So there are definitely pearls of the year 2022 that I simply didn’t play due to lack of time.

Do you have your own top 5? Wonderful, feel free to share them in the comments! I always see this as an opportunity for me to learn new things. And certainly many other readers are also happy about alternatives. And with that, my rambling ends and here are my top 5 PS5 titles of 2022.

5. Stray

There was enormous hype about the title “Stray” right after the launch, although this is not a triple-A hammer. But the main character of this game is a cat, which explains a lot. In fact, apart from the stringent puzzle gameplay, the developers have managed to capture the typical quirks of the four-legged friends. And so I’m certainly not the only player who has spent a significant portion of his time shoving objects off ledges into chasms, clinging to carpets, or just mewing around.

“Stray” is also technically successful and shows an apocalyptic world whose mysteries are only slowly revealed as the game progresses. It’s no surprise that Sony also used this title as an initial bonus for the launch of its new PlayStation Plus plans.

4. The Quarry

“The Quarry” is the only one of the games from my PS5 top 5 list that could easily be in the Xbox counterpart. However, I just played this indirect successor to “Until Dawn” on the Sony console, so it would have felt wrong to list it on the Microsoft console. Like “Until Dawn” before it, “The Quarry” is pure teen horror through and through, mixing gore and jumpscares with a dense atmosphere. And here, too, you should be prepared for the fact that this game sometimes feels more like an interactive film.

The cast recorded via motion capture is in a good mood: Halston Sage from “The Orville”, Ariel Winter from “Modern Family” or David Arquette from the series “Scream” are part of the party. I don’t want to spoil the story for you and it certainly won’t win an Oscar, but it’s entertaining and is in no way inferior to classic teen horror films. By the way, if you don’t feel like any gameplay, you can even watch the game in a movie mode like a movie.

3. The Last of Us: Part I

I’ve never been a hardcore fan of The Last of Us. For example, the characters tend to be too stereotypical for me and the dystopian story about a zombie virus doesn’t win a flower pot for me either. Technically and atmospherically, however, the game was already terrific on the PlayStation 3. The new remake for the PS5 is the second remake after a PS4 remaster and gives this classic from Naughty Dog a completely new look.

Now it looks like this: If you played the original until you drop, you will not experience any expansions or innovations that go beyond the new technical paintwork. That’s why “The Last of Us: Part I” is primarily something for newcomers who get a title at the current level here. However, the hose-level structure still reminds us of the PS3 roots. Nevertheless, a first-class exclusive.

2. God of War Ragnarok

Kratos is back: The sequel to “God of War” is more extensive and even more varied than its predecessor. I don’t think the story quite matches the moving, personal story of the debut, but the journey to the end of the world has never been so much fun. Especially since the Nordic mythology is handled in a great way and many characters are embedded in the plot in very individual variants.

Technically, “God of War Ragnarök” on the PS5 is essentially a subtly beefed up PS4 port that shows its roots. It is clearly recognizable that the last gen was still the lead platform here. But that in no way spoils this epic pleasure. Especially since with all the grim murmurs of the god of war, the humor is not neglected. Simply an extremely entertaining action-adventure that I believe belongs in every good PS5 collection.

1. Horizon Forbidden West

“Horizon Zero Dawn” is one of the best PS4 games ever for me and in my opinion the sequel tops it in all respects. Yes, I’ll admit that I even liked the even more offbeat story better than the debut. First trailers made me skeptical about the technology, but this fabulous, open game world actually looks stunning in 4K and HDR. Due to the fast-paced, yet tactical battles, even simple collection tasks are fun here. In my opinion, the developers at Guerrilla Games also took a very close look at the quests from “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”, because here too, even small side tasks are always garnished with a nice framework story and corresponding cutscenes.

The soundtrack is also in a class of its own for me, so I also enjoyed listening to songs like “In the Flood” on Spotify when I was not playing the game. I must have chocked almost 100 hours into Aloy’s adventures and thoroughly enjoyed each of them – exactly what a video game should achieve. Story, technology, atmosphere, gameplay – everything fits together here for me. So I see “Horizon Forbidden West” as a real system seller and it’s not only my PS5 game of the year 2022, but overall the best PS5 game that you can currently buy.
