• Super Mario Bros. has already grossed $678 million at the worldwide box office
  • For its 2nd week, it suffers a drop of 41% (against 60% usually for blockbusters)
  • The success of Super Mario Bros. is not about to stop

There are not many animated films that have been so lucrative in cinemas around the world in such a short time. For its start, Super Mario Bros. marked history and does not intend to stop there. In just two weeks on release, Nintendo’s mustachioed plumber animated film has raked in $678 million, overshadowing the highly anticipated (and somewhat disappointing) Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

For its second week in dark rooms, Super Mario Bros. the movies grossed $87 million, which equates to a 41% drop from its debut. If this information does not enlighten you on the success of the animated film, note that generally, blockbusters suffer a drop in attendance of around 60% during their second week of exploitation. Only a few exceptions, such as Frozen 2, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens or Shrek 2 did as well.

Indeed, after the first week of broadcast, the enthusiasm of the spectators fades little by little. Thus, the analyst Paul Dergarabedian is formal: “There aren’t enough adjectives to describe the enormity of this box office performance”. And a priori, Mario, Luigi, Peach and their friends should continue this momentum.

Super Mario Bros: the hot tip of success

And Super Mario Bros. meets with such success, it is not really a coincidence. For starters, this is an extremely anticipated movie, based on a franchise that’s been beloved for years. In addition, the feature film is aimed at a wide audience: children, animated film requires, but also adults, who grew up with the adventures of Mario. With these “kartes” in hand, it is not surprising to see Super Mario Bros smash all records. Especially since the film achieves a feat: to offer an adaptation of video games worthy of the name. The film is a real marvel, which explains its dazzling success.

Finally, Super Mario Bros. has no real competition in dark rooms at the moment. Indeed, the voice was free for Mario and Luigi, especially for its first week. Even if, in France, The three Musketeers had its small effect. With a release the following week, Suzume or Dungeons & Dragons failed to eclipse the mustachioed brothers.

Good news : Super Mario Bros. should still have two good weeks of operation ahead of it. At least. With a release scheduled for May 3, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 should threaten the animated film monopoly. And again… Nothing is certain.
