Of the approximately 310,000 residents of the district, 69,500 are active in over 335 sports clubs, company sports associations and other groups, and around 80 sports are practiced. And many more people follow their urge to move in an “unorganized” way, be it by playing table tennis in the park, Nordic walking in Grunewald, jogging along the Teltow Canal or stand-up paddling on Schlachtensee or Wannsee.

We want to make the best possible infrastructure available to those who are active and those who want to become one.

Councilor for Sports Cerstin Richter-Kotowski (CDU)

To ensure that the district is fit for the sporting future of its growing population, the sports department has now commissioned the office “die raumplaner” to create a “specialist plan for sports and exercise”. The goals: On the one hand, it should be found out where and by whom in the district sport is being practiced.

On the other hand, recommendations for action are to be formulated, taking into account the current and forecast population developments and the changed sport and exercise behavior, where offers are to be consolidated, expanded or newly created by 2035 – both for club sports and for unorganized athletes. Because sports development is more than just expanding sports facilities.

“We want to provide the active and those who want to become one with the best possible infrastructure and continuously develop it further,” says City Councilor for Sports Cerstin Richter-Kotowski (CDU). Developing an “integrated sports development plan” is “a further step towards strengthening the Steglitz-Zehlendorf sports district”.

A year ago, the CDU voted against a sports development plan

A year ago, the CDU’s comments on the sports development plan sounded different. The Greens and SPD had submitted a request to the district assembly to draw up such an inventory and needs analysis; The FDP and the Left joined the motion. The CDU did not consider the plan to be necessary: ”If you look around, you can see what kind of sport there is,” said CDU district councilor Michael McLaughlin, rejecting the issue in the debate in May 2022.

City councilor Richter-Kotowski feared at the time that a lot of money would be spent “without being able to do anything useful with the data collected”. Finally, a vote was taken: the CDU voted against the application, the traffic light groups and the left prevailed.

Online survey started

The district office has now acted and the contract has been awarded to the external experts. In a first step of the analysis, the planners are now asking for your help: an online survey will be held until May 31st. How often is sport done? Are you active in a club or informally? Where is the sport practiced? Which sporting offers are missing in the district?

A total of 26 questions have to be answered. Very important: If you want to take part in the survey, you have to register first – only then can you tick the first box; Unfortunately, a corresponding note is missing in the moderation of the survey. Here it goes to Survey on the participation platform mein.berlin.de.
