Spam, popular food in Hawaii, donates 264,000 cans of food to fire victims

Spam, a meat product popular in Hawaii for decades, is sending aid to island residents in the aftermath of the devastating Maui wildfires.

The company, Hormel Foods Corporationannounced the shipment of three trucks loaded with 260,000 cans to help residents affected by the disaster.

“The people of Hawaii hold a special place both in the history and at the heart of the Spam brand. Our giving efforts are just one way to show the community our love and support,” Jennesa Kinscher, Spam Brand Director.

Hormel was associated with Convoy of Hopea non-profit organization whose mission includes helping those affected by natural disasters, to help send the donations.

“We know how popular SPAM® products are, especially in Hawaii. This donation allows Convoy of Hope to bring comfort to people whose lives have been turned upside down,” said Stacy Lamb, vice president of disaster services for Convoy of Hope.

A specially designed t-shirt for Hawaii “Spam Brand Loves Maui” was created by the company in order to raise funds. The company said 100% of the funds will go to the Aloha United Way’s Maui Fire Relief Fund for relief efforts on the island.

In a Facebook post, Spam sent a message to Hawaii residents that read in part “To our Maui ‘ohana, we see you and love you.”

The company also announced in a press release that it was raising money to donate to the island’s local food bank, and that Hormel will match every donation received.

Spam products are highly prized by the Hawaiian people, who buy more than 7 million cans a year, more than any other US state, according to the company. The love for this meat product began in World War II, where the meat product was served to American soldiers.

Hormel Foods has long supported disaster efforts through partners like Convoy of Hope and World Central Kitchen, among others, providing products and financial resources that have been used to help those affected by natural disasters and food insecurity, the company stated in its statement.
