We’re currently seeing an explosion of AI-generated content across the web, and even music streaming isn’t safe anymore. The other day, Spotify announced that they are deleting tens of thousands of works created through Boomy, a service that allows users to generate music in different styles that can then be easily uploaded to different platforms. Then armies of bots are used to drive up listens and generate royalties.

According to Business Insider Universal Music reached out to Spotify to clarify the issue and a company spokesperson had the following to say after the news broke:

“Artificial streaming is a longstanding, industry-wide issue that Spotify is working to stamp out across our service.”

Universal Music has also previously been involved in trying to block AI services and a person close to the company who was in contact with Financial Times explained the situation as follows:

“You could say: compose a song that has the lyrics to be like Taylor Swift, but the vocals to be in the style of Bruno Mars, but I want the theme to be more Harry Styles,”

“The output you get is due to the fact the AI has been trained on those artists’ intellectual property.”

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has also spoken out as recently as last month about the music industry’s concerns about artificial intelligence and apparently hopes that Spotify, as one of the market leaders, will set a standard.

What are your thoughts on AI generated content?

“Hm, great beat but needs more recorder and Christer Sjögren”
