The streaming service Spotify has removed thousands of songs from its platform that were created with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Many songs from start-up Boomy have been deleted after growing complaints of fraud and disorder at streaming services recently, the Financial Times (“FT”) reported today.

Music giant Universal Music pointed out that “suspicious streaming activity” had been detected on boomy titles, a person familiar with the situation told the FT.

Bots are said to have boosted streaming numbers

The Boomy songs were removed due to suspicion of “artificial streaming”. Specifically, these are bots that pretend to be human listeners in order to artificially inflate the streaming numbers for certain songs.

AI has facilitated this type of fraud, according to the FT. The technology would make it possible to create many music tracks in a very short time, which can then be uploaded and streamed online.

Songs at the touch of a button

Boomy, which has been on the market for two years, allows its users to create an AI-generated song at the push of a button. Users can then share the music with streaming services, where they receive royalties. California-based Boomy claims its users have created more than 14 million songs.

Spotify confirmed to the FT that it has removed some boomy content. “Artificial streaming is a long-standing, industry-wide problem that Spotify is trying to eliminate across its offering,” the company said.
