Berlin
Elections will be held in four federal states in 2023. It starts with the redial in Berlin. Most races are still completely open.

The election year 2023 starts curiously with the repeat election in Berlin. On February 12, 2023, Berliners will elect a new House of Representatives and the twelve district councils.

They actually voted for it in September 2021. However, there were numerous glitches and electoral errors in the election. After a thorough examination, Berlin State Constitutional Court decided: the election must be repeated in its entirety.

This is also one of them Federal election 2021 affected. Because it took place in the capital on the same day as the Berlin elections. However, it is expected to only be repeated in 431 of the approximately 2,300 Berlin districts. However, the Bundestag decides on this. The parties are already in campaign mode. According to surveys, the SPD, CDU and Greens are almost on par. The governing mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) has to fear for her office.

In these four states will be elected in 2023:

  • Berlin: Repeat of the elections to the House of Representatives and the District Assembly on February 12, 2023
  • Bremen: Election of the Bremen Parliament on May 14, 2023
  • Bavaria: State elections on October 8, 2023
  • Hesse: state elections in autumn (exact date not yet known)

Smallest federal state consistently votes social democratic

On May 14th, Berlin will be followed by the citizenship elections Bremen. Bremen is considered the stronghold of the Social Democrats. They’ve ruled the city continuously for decades. In the 2019 election, however, the SPD lost votes and ended up behind the CDU for the first time. However, the Social Democrats were able to continue governing in a three-party coalition with the Greens and the Left.

According to current election polls, the SPD is again stable, with just under 30 percent, ahead of the CDU (20 percent). Whether it is enough for the SPD and the Greens (20 percent) to enter into a coalition without the left is still open. mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) will probably keep his office.

Söder in campaign mode, black and green in Hesse on the brink

The election campaign in Bavaria is already under way. A coalition of CSU and Free Voters has governed there since the last election in 2018. The CSU lost theirs in 2018 absolute majority. It is unlikely that Prime Minister Markus Söder will regain the absolute majority. It is also unclear whether the coalition will continue or whether there will be a coalition between the CSU (41 percent) and the Greens (18 percent).

Hesse is the end this year. Ruled there after the resignation of Volker Bouffier in May 2022 Boris Rhein (both CDU) in a coalition with the Greens. According to polls, it would probably just be enough for the coalition to continue. However, other coalitions are also mathematically possible and the tensions between the coalition partners have repeatedly become apparent in recent years. So the outcome of the election remains open.

The elections in the federal states are closely monitored by the party leaders in Berlin. Then state elections also serve as a signal from the voters to the federal parties. The traffic light parties in particular could draw conclusions for future government work. After the four elections in 2023, there will be elections in Saxony, Brandenburg and Thuringia in 2024.
