Sore throat, cough, fever: numerous people in Germany caught the flu at the end of last year. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the numbers in reporting week 50 (12/12/2022 – 12/18/2022) were more than 160,000 people infected with influenza. At this point in the flu season (40th calendar week of a year (beginning of October) to 20th calendar week of the following year (mid-May)), that is extremely much, like looking at the Infographic by Statista and MIT Technology Review shows.

The RKI writes in its weekly report for the 50th calendar weekthat the values are above the level of previous years at the peak of severe flu outbreaks. The case numbers shown here only include laboratory-confirmed cases that are reported to the RKI via a network of sentinel practices.
Germany is not alone with its flu epidemic. The influenza intensity has also increased throughout Europe according to the flunewseurope portal increased. 33 countries or territories report widespread activity and/or moderate to very high intensity. In addition to Germany, this also includes Austria, France, Estonia and Luxembourg. Both type A and type B influenza viruses were detected.
