Steam has reached a new milestone: Over the weekend, more than 10 million people were playing games online via Steam at the same time for the first time. At the same time, a new record was reached in terms of the number of users logged in: That was over 33 million people simultaneously.

The latter value in particular is often picked up in the media, but it basically means less, since the Steam client may have simply been placed in the autostart and users are logged in without actively using Steam. It is actually more exciting that more than 10 million Steam users actually used games in parallel for the first time.

As a PC gamer, you can hardly avoid Steam these days, and of course I also use the service. However, I also remember the time when I boycotted any game tying to digital platforms and initially avoided Steam. For me, that changed at the time because of “Half-Life 2”. In the meantime, optical media for PC games can hardly be found, which then led to an upswing not only for Steam, but also for the Epic Games Store or GOG.com.
