This Friday work stoppages and protests were reported in Chetumal, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. The members of the Union of Academic and Administrative Workers of the University of Quintana Roo (Sauqroo), also demand from the rector Francisco López Mena, a retroactive payment on the request for a salary increase and the approval of the regulation of administrative personnel.
In the capital Chetumal, the protest started from the Quintana Roo State Congress, toured Bahía Boulevard and arrived at the Government Palace. With slogans they accused Francisco López Mena of being a “liar” for not having resolved the situation of the workers up to now.
At the Government Palace, Mario Vargas Paredes, general secretary of Sauqroo, announced that they already have the legal mechanism before the Federal Center for Conciliation and Labor Registration for the summons to strike agreed for Friday, July 14.
On that date it will be known if the university authorities made the deposit of salary payments with the 4% increase for 257 unionized workers.
In the event that the strike takes place, more than three thousand students will be affected by the paralysis of the educational system of Uqroo, the most important higher education institute in Quintana Roo.
According to consulted strikers, Rector López Mena seeks to inherit the conflict from his successor, since he will leave office on August 15. Although according to the dissatisfied, the negotiation of the collective bargaining agreement began at the end of last year.
At the same time, the Uqroo registers these days the selection process of the new head of the rectory who will occupy the place of Francisco López Mena, a succession that has been described as flawed, since the names of the three selected were leaked on social networks before the date indicated in the call, for which the Board of Directors rejected the candidates sent by the Special Commission.
In this context, some consulted Uqroo student sectors are uncertain about the end of this school year.
