ChihuahuaThe request for collective protection presented by the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) against the new regulation of the General Law for Tobacco Control, is “stuck” by the extensive list of appeals in process in the courts, reported the president of the business organization, Omar Armendáriz Jurado.

“There has not been much push in the courts, because there is a lot of work and the request for this protection is added to the list,” he said.

The representative of organized commerce specified that the CANACO legal team is awaiting the status of the application.

A total of 25 restaurants that have a smoking area joined the collective protection presented by the Canaco, a lower figure than initially contemplated, since in the city there are few establishments that invested in a smoking area, said Armendáriz Jurado.

The changes to the General Law for Tobacco Control, which entered into force on January 15, stipulate in relation to restaurants that they will no longer be able to offer their service in smoking areas.

Canaco’s call to join the collective protection was opened to all establishments affected by the new regulation of the General Law for Tobacco Control and not only to members of the organization with the aim of further strengthening the resource.

The two main provisions of the new regulation are the total ban on all forms of advertising and promotion of tobacco products, including their display at points of sale, and the extension of protection against smoke and emissions from any tobacco product and nicotine.

At the national level, definitive suspensions have been granted to restaurants against the General Law for Tobacco Control, as well as provisional suspensions.
