Pregnant women or new mothers who are infected by the coronavirus are eight times more likely to die compared to pregnant women who do not have Covid-19, according to a study published on Monday (16/1) in the scientific journal BMJ Global Health.
The discovery comes from the international meta-analysis of data from 12 studies carried out by different institutions with more than 13,000 pregnant women. The research focused on the evolution of Covid-19 in pregnant women and newborn babies and points out the situations that presented a higher risk rate among women with the disease. The authors of the study warn of the need to protect these patients with a complete vaccination schedule.
Participants were separated into two large groups, the first with women diagnosed with Covid-19 during pregnancy or within seven days after delivery. The second was the control, with pregnant women who had negative results in tests for detecting the coronavirus.
The data showed that infected pregnant women were 24 times more likely to have inflammation in the lungs, and 15 times more likely to need the assistance of mechanical ventilation during the infection.

Experts point out that one of the main measures provided by the booster dose is the expansion of the immune response. The third dose causes an increase in the amount of antibodies circulating in the body, which reduces the chance of the immunized person getting sick.Tomaz Silva/Agência Brasil

Another important measure is to reduce the chance of infection in case of new variants. The antibody promoted by the vaccine is directed to the strain that gave rise to the formula and, in this process, people also produce antibodies that have diversity. The greater the reach of the proteins that defend the organism, the greater the probability that some will bind to the new variantWestend61/GettyImages

They were also 5.5 times more likely to develop thromboembolic disease and need to adopt critical clinical care, in addition to being almost four times more likely to be admitted to intensive care units (ICUs).
Complications after infection with the coronavirus also extend to babies. Covid-19 was associated with a higher risk of premature births, with three times more chances up to the 34th week and 2.4 times more up to the 37th. The hospitalization of babies in neonatal ICUs was twice as high among children of infected mothers.
