Un study prepared by Fundación Telefónica and shared by country indicates that there are six companies controlling more than half of the world’s Internet traffic.

The study in question – called The Digital Society in Spain 2023 – indicates that Internet traffic has increased by around 35% every year, an increase that (however) continues to be controlled by these companies.

The study indicates that Alphabet (Google) controls 21% of the total, followed by Meta (Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) with 15%, Netflix with 9%, Apple with 4%, Amazon with 4% and Microsoft with 3%. Control by these US companies leads to higher costs for network operators in the European Union.

Furthermore, the study states that 90% of European Internet users have access to these platforms, while only 40% of people in Africa can access these platforms.
